In an effort to keep costs low and allow for the creation of the widest range of characters possible, action figures are often largely based on the same core sculpts as other figures in the same line with similar physiques. These templates come in multiple basic body styles to be enhanced with specific sculpted detail like new heads, hands and accessories as well as unique paint to differentiate them.

Colloquially, though technically incorrectly, these are often referred to as "Bucks" in the collecting community, named for the wooden base in classic figure production that sculptors would use as the base of the figure.
